Grupo Tortuguero Los Barriles

Grupo Tortuguero is a non profit organization located in Los Barriles, B.C.S., Mexico dedicated to the conservation of indangered sea turtles.  Omar and Noe Araiza founded Grupo Tortuguero in 2009.  The goal is to increase the percentage of turtles that will reach adult hood by relocating turtle eggs into a protected area and releasing them into the ocean at the optimal time.  By doing this, Grupo Tortuguero has been able to significantly increase the turtle population in southern Baja of more than five indangered species of turtles in the area.

If you would like to take part in a turtle release in Los Barriles, Grupo Tortuguero has a release almost daily from August to February (months may vary) every morning down from Amigos Bar starting at around 7-7:30am.

Sometimes when possible, the hotel can schedule a turtle release in front of the hotel for groups.  These usually take place right before sunset in front of the Bay View Restaurant.

Keep in mind that turtle releases happen when turtles hatch on any given day.  If there are no turtles that have hatched on a particular day, then there will not be a turtle release.  If you are lucky enough, you will get to see one during your next visit.  It's in Mother Natures hands, not ours.
